Strange object seen Over Bolton Lancashire - what was it?

Posters comments:
Please be patient as initially I couldn't get the strange object in my viewfinder straight away. At first I thought this mysterious object was a balloon, but it appears symmetrical and uniform in shape. The object which I have coined 'The Flying Sofa' moved silently overhead, spinning in a controlled fashion and intermittently flashing a bright, white light from its own suface like a beacon, (not light reflections from the sun) as the weather was quite overcast and the object was a dark, black colour and not metallic. It didn't look like part of an aeroplane and I'm sure any man made object/ satallite this size coming from space would have burned up in the Earth's atmosphere. Later in the video you can see how far I had to zoom in to see it, so I think the object could possibly have been between the size of a family car and a single decker bus at about a thousand feet or more as an estimate. It casually moved off, seeming to stay airborne and not falling to the ground. What could this strange and intriguing object be???

a light plastic bag floating in the air.

Looks like a runaway box kite or something drifting on the wind. I must say, though, I like the idea of a flying couch much better! ; )

From what I could tell from that video the object appears to travelling in the direction of the clouds, in other words, wind driven.

An elaborate hoax?

At 2:33 the maker of this video loses focus of the object, however the camera's focus on the tower in the foreground doesn't change, clearly making this video a fake.

its clearly a large novelty balloon blowing in the breeze

At first I thought it was an untethered kite--not a kid's kite but rather the huge sort meteorologists will use to record data about the atmosphere. I'm not convinced of that theory myself, but it's my best shot for now. Like the poster says, it's intriguing.

Good spotting at 2:33 you're right about the focus. I'm not expert on lenses but that doesn't look normal.

this is a helium party balloon. Its the number "1" to be exact, watch in 720p and you can see the string as well .

I saw some of these recently ,guess they are becoming more popular by the month.
They are balloons shaped in letters and numbers usually let off to celebrate childrens birthdays.
I must admit the first time I saw one of these I though it looked strange too.

I agree that it's a balloon, however there is a second object at the very end of the video (2:43) seemingly following the other object. No one has made mention of this, even the person who posted it. Kind of a vital point to notice!

My boyfriend and I saw something very similar to that in Vancouver, BC Canada at the end of July. It looked like black ballon as well, it didn't spin like that at all though. It just went through the sky at a steady pace. It was slightly windy so if it was a balloon it would have changed speeds and directions in the clouds. Anyway, it's neat to see someone else captured something similar.

Keep lookin' at the skies!!!!

The object at 2:43 on the video, I think is the same one we're looking at,throughout!! and at that
point, seems to tumble down and flash a round white light and eventually vanish out of VIEW!?

Throughout this video, the object in question, has disappeared out of view, but not only just that,it is seen to be in a different location, throughout this recording.

Is THIS the normal thing you would
expect to see a balloon to be doing???

I have my doubts about it being a balloon!!...I'm not saying it isn't
because I don't know that!?
but you've got to think its a bit
unusual. So if its not a balloon,
what else could it be??...........

So no one saw the flashing towards the end of the video? it was just floating then out of nowhere flashing..hows that a balloon?

EXACTLY!!

My point too,..Bryan!?.........

It looks like a balloon spinning on wind and atmospheric currents it's certainly out of control ! the light at the end cud just be light refraction but no one can say for sure ,
interesting though!

I agree with most people here, its a number '1' part ballon. Having released my son's '6' balloon it behaved in a similar manner. It isn't flashing either, as the angle to the camera becomes more acute it captures more reflections of the sun in relation to a reasonable amount of cloud cover. It appears dark when it's silhouetted against the bright clouds. With regards to the focus issue at 2:33, the object completely blurs whilst the chimney pot 'slightly' blurs - this is typical of a camcorder lens. As the lens tries to focus, a distant object loses focus far quicker than closer objects. This change of focus occurs simultaneously with the foreground chimney pot and the object. So no, its not a fake but by the same token, its just not typical airborne phenomena.
